GIS Internship - Blog Post #2

In the last couple weeks, I have explored GIS at my workplace and through job postings. As someone who does not intend for GIS to be my sole job responsibility, I think that it was interesting to see how GIS is built into my current workplace and how it is advertised at the jobs that I was interested in.

For instance, even though I use GIS regularly, GIS is not in my job title likewise other researchers at my facility also use it, more than I do in many cases, and it is also not in their job titles. It was interesting to see how my observations differed with classmates or where there were similarities. For instance, one classmate noted that the use of GIS in archaeology was similar to my experiences in biology/ecology. It is often viewed as a tool - helpful to those asking spatial questions but not necessary or advertised using the same GIS lingo as a more typical GIS position.

Though my biggest takeaway from the last few assignments has been the growth and importance of GIS across so many industries. Again while it is not advertised in my title, I could not do my job without my GIS background and knowledge. I decided to embark on this certification because I became aware that GIS is applicable to so many sectors of science. That awareness was further reinforced during these past few assignments.
